Telexc Helical Tension Clamps are designed for secure dead-end termination of OPGW(Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire) and ADSS(All-Dielectric Self-Supporting)cable in aerial broadband deployments and communication networks. The system combines preformed dead-end grips with structural reinforcing armor rods to provide effective load transfer while protecting the cable from mechanical damage.

The specially designed armor rods provide cushioning and stress distribution, ensuring that no undue stress is applied to the OPGW or ADSS cable. This design significantly enhances cable system reliability and ensures long service life under continuous tensile and environmental loads.

Helical Tension Sets are mainly used for cables with Rated Tensile Strength (RTS) up to 160 kN, installed on terminal poles/towers, tension poles, corner poles/, and continuation structures.

A complete Telexc OPGW Helical Tension Set includes:

  • Preformed Dead-End Grip (Aluminum alloy / Aluminum-clad steel)

  • Structural Reinforcing (Armor) Rods

  • Thimble, Shackles, Parallel Plates

  • Supporting fittings

  • Grounding wire clamp (supplied together; not installed directly on armor rods or dead-end)

Applications in Communication and Telecommunication Networks

Preformed Guy Grips are widely utilized in outdoor communication line construction, particularly in overhead fiber optic networks, telecommunication pole lines, and tower support systems. For fiber optic cables that are continuously exposed to outdoor environments—and subjected to the stresses of wind, tension, and vibration—these grips provide reliable termination, guy wire anchoring, and mechanical reinforcement capabilities.

In Outside Plant (OSP) fiber optic projects, Preformed Guy Grips securely fasten ADSS cables, messenger wires, and supporting steel strands to communication poles and telecommunication towers. During subsequent operations, they help maintain stable tension in the fiber optic cables and effectively mitigate the risk of cable slippage.

Furthermore, Preformed Guy Grips are employed in FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) deployments, broadband access networks, rural communication lines, and fiber optic backbone routing. They provide robust support for cable connections across pole spans, anchoring at terminal poles, and line reinforcement at corner points, endpoints, and high-tension sections.

For telecommunication towers and antenna support systems, Preformed Guy Grips serve as dependable anchoring points for guy wires and steel strands. Under various outdoor load conditions, they help ensure the structural stability of towers, masts, antenna assemblies, and communication support frameworks.

Typical Telecommunication Application Scenarios

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Guy Wires & Guy Grip Dead Ends

Q1. What is a guy wire?

A guy wire is a tensioned cable used to stabilize poles, towers, and masts by counteracting lateral loads such as wind, conductor tension, or unbalanced forces.

Q2. Why is it called a guy wire?

The term originates from the French and Dutch word “gei”, meaning a rope used to steady ships. The same concept applies to stabilizing vertical structures.

Q3. What are the common types of guy wire fittings?

Guy wire systems typically include:

  • Shackles

  • Turnbuckles

  • Thimbles

  • Guy clamps

  • Guy grip (dead-end grips)

Q4. What is a guy grip (dead-end grip)?

A guy grip, also known as a preformed dead-end grip, is a helically formed wire fitting designed to securely terminate guy wires, conductors, or ground wires. It distributes tensile load evenly along the wire without damaging the conductor.

Q5. How does a guy grip work?

The guy grip is installed by manually wrapping its preformed helical legs around the conductor or guy wire. Once applied, the grip tightens under tension, creating a strong, slip-free mechanical connection. The closed loop connects to an anchor rod, thimble, or insulator.

Q6. What materials are used for Telexc guy grips?

Telexc guy grips are manufactured from:

  • Hot-dip galvanized steel wire

  • Aluminum wire

  • Aluminum-clad steel wire

Preformed grips are typically made from the same material as the conductor to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Q7. What span distances are supported?

Guy grips are available for various span ranges, such as:

  • 0–100 m

  • 101–200 m

  • 201–300 m

  • 301–400 m and above

For spans exceeding 200 m, designs may include inner and outer rods. Color coding (yellow, red, green, blue, black, orange) is used for easy size identification.

Q8. What hardware accessories are used with guy grips?

Guy grips are commonly used with:

  • Thimbles

  • U-shackles

  • Extension links

  • Straps

  • Anchor rods

  • Insulators

They are suitable for conductor gripping, grounding wire termination, and optical fiber applications.

Q9. What is the difference between a guy clamp and a guy grip?

  • Guy Clamp: A mechanical device with bolts used to secure and tension guy wires; allows adjustment but may cause stress concentration.

  • Guy Grip: A preformed helical fitting that terminates the wire by evenly distributing load along its length, offering higher reliability and reduced maintenance.

Q10. What are the advantages of guy grips?

  • Tool-free and quick installation

  • High holding strength (up to 95% of conductor breaking strength)

  • Uniform stress distribution

  • Low maintenance and inspection requirements

  • Long service life and corrosion resistance

  • Compliance with international standards

Q11. Are there any limitations of guy grips?

Potential limitations include:

  • Limited post-installation adjustment

  • Requirement for correct size selection

  • Environmental exposure considerations

  • Load and wire-size compatibility limits

These can be mitigated through proper design selection and installation practices.

Q12. What types of dead-end grips does Telexc offer?

  • Guy Wire Dead-End Grips

  • Preformed Ground Wire Dead Ends

  • Conductor & Messenger Wire Preformed Grips

Q13. Is a guy grip a tension or suspension fitting?

A guy grip is a tension (dead-end) fitting, designed to transfer full mechanical load.

Q14. Are special tools required for installation?

No. Telexc preformed guy grips are designed for manual installation without tools.

Q15. Can guy grips be used with ADSS and ACSR conductors?

Yes. Selected Telexc models are suitable for ADSS, ACSR, ground wires, and messenger wires, subject to correct sizing.

Q16. How can a correct installation be verified?

Proper installation can be confirmed visually by checking:

  • Correct lay direction

  • Full wrap of helical legs

  • Proper seating of the grip loop

No special gauges are required.

Q17. Is customization available?

Yes. Telexc offers OEM and customized designs based on conductor type, span length, mechanical load, and project-specific requirements.
